Strange Electrical Outlet Posted by Big Jim on June 29th, 2003 11:51 AM

One outlet in a bedroom is connected to the light switch. My wife wants a ceiling fan with light in the room. I decided to run off the outlet and up into the fan for power. I turned off the circuit breaker and checked the outlet with a tester and saw no power. (I am sure the tester is functioning properly) I removed the cover and found: 2 whites connected on one side of the outlet and 1 black connected to the other side of the outlet and 2 seperate wire groups running into the box. The second black wire seems to be attached to the back of the box. As far as I can find, this outlet is the only thing operated by the light switch. Again, I checked the outlet and the tester showed no power. I removed the top white wire; which was in the same wire group as the black connected to the outlet and got a spark. I tested the wires and the tester still showed nothing. When I touched the outlet I got an electrical shock. I then noticed that the hallway light (which had been on) had gone out. I turned off the breaker for the hallway light and there was no more shock from the outlet.
I put everything back together and turned on all of the power. When the light switch is on, my tester reads power at the outlet. When the light switch is off, my tester shows no power at the outlet.
Any idea what is going on here?
