old phone line Posted by John C on June 29th, 2003 12:23 PM In reply to old phone line problem by Neil on June 29th, 2003 11:58 AM [Go to top of thread]
Neil, The 4 wire (2 pair)is the standard phone wire for home use and the colors are actually red, green, yellow and black with green/red being pair 1 and black/yellow being pair 2. The 8 wire (4 pair) is a newer style. The pairs are the white/blue and blue (pair 1), white/orange and orange (pair 2), white/green and green (pair 3), and white/brown and brown (pair 4). So, if you desire to follow the proper scheme, hook the white/blue to green and blue to red. The colors were important years ago when phones and systems were "polarity sensitive" but it really doesn't matter today, as long as you can draw a dial tone. Hope this helps. Was this post helpful?
