if you don't have berber carpet, you can try small headless nails (like a finish nail) and drive through the carpet and pad into the floor joists where the squeak occurs. Berber carpet loops will unwind if you nail through. If you have berber as I do, you may have to pull the carpet and screw floor as I did.
