Once you got the ring in place, put the toilet down and sit on it. Rock it around a little bit to get the fit right.
Trust me, if one of those damn things ain't seated right you'll regret it.
wax rings aren't that bad, try a spud washer on the tank, i've never had one of those things not leak. both of my toilets have spud washers with RTV around them.
