** Someone told me I only needed a 20 amp breaker but non of this is consistent with the 220 lines I ran before for stoves, dryers etc. **

The breaker size will depend on the appliance which is connected to it. It should say on the A/C which amperage it requires or you can also sometimes tell by the type of plug on the appliance's cord (see below). Generally a dryer or stove would require a higher amperage circuit than most (window/wall) air conditioners would.
