Soot on Walls

There is soot on most of my walls, but especially around forced-air vents. I had the furnace checked twice and the technician said that the furnace is very clean and not the cause of the problem. He blamed it on burning candles, but I rarely burn them, and when I did, it was usually only 1 candle and/or 1 tealight candle. I have not burned any in a while, but soot seems worse. Any suggestions on the cause(s) and how to clean the walls? I painted with semi-gloss paint less than 2 years ago, but the problem has been ongoing shortly thereafter. The soot seeps into my closed closets and adheres to all my plastic utensils, tupperware/rubbermaid containers & trash baskets so terribly that I can not clean all the soot marks off, although I scrub them with very hot, soapy water and run them through the dishwasher. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
