Basement Dampness

I have one corner of the basement that has stains and the white chalky residue. I have cleaned out my drainage pipe, which I think will help. However, the water from the pipe stands near the rear of the house. Question: I have dug a trench, can I put gravel in it, put a pipe with holes on the bottom in the trench to disburse the water? Also, how do I get rid of the stains on the wall? Should I use a waterproof (Damtite)on the wall?
