how do i fill/seal cracks btwn patio slabs?

Hi there.
My problem is: my husband has a patio that his mother laid about 10 years ago or so. The slabs were not (at least i don't think so) placed on a concrete base. and they have never been filled with any substance. The cracks/spaces between the slabs are also uneven -between some there isn't even any spaces!). The weeds come up through the spaces, and I have tried putting down fine building sand between them, to see if it would suppress the weeds. It hasn't.

Is there anything I can use that will not mess the surrounding stones? (my husband has tried some kind of filler (white caulking type stuff) and it just made a mess of the surronding stones and didn't go down the cracks. Is there anything (perhaps a clear sealant?) that i can put between the slabs that won't ruin the look of them and keep weeds at bay?

Any help/info is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
