caitlin, it sounds like you may have the same kind of 18" square concrete patio stones that I have. One thing that you do want to watch is that tree roots and simila things will move the stones up and down and all around. They get tilted toward you house pretty easily and you have to put new san under them occasionally. I completely relay mine about every 10 years.
Round-Up is the only thing that works for weeds between the stones. Follow label directions. The other problem that you may have is that ants love to build under the stones. Since the EPA made us stop the use of Chordane and we haven't yet come up with anything that worked as well, ants will always be a problem. I have found that if you try to kill all of them everywhere on your property, they will come from other places to take over the space or the few survivors will breed heavily for a while. You may not like this, but my suggestion is to let a colony go where it's not a particular problem, like toward the front or back of your property, and kill them near the house. You may think that you got all of them when you do spray them, but they always come back with a vengence. Keeping them in check seems to work better than trying to rid yourself of them forever.
