Toilet Makes Loud Gurgles and then Drains Itself

Posted by Gurgle Gurgle on July 11th, 2003 07:43 AM

Hello! I have a toilet problem that I have seen similar messages about, but mine is a little different because we do not have a septic tank. We have regular city plumbing in a 2 story house with a basement. The toilet upstairs makes loud gurgle and plop sounds in the morning and drains itself. I suspect this happens in the other upstairs bathroom as well. Although I have never heard it gurgle, I have found the bowl almost empty at the same time as the gurgling toilet.

We have guests staying in our basement (with a full bath) so now that toilet and shower are now being used a lot. We have an underground pump in the basement to flush the sewage up to the main level and out of the home. Could that be part of the problem?

Some additional factors that may be involved: 1) We have had a lot of rain lately, which may be a factor as well, but not sure since we have city water and sewage.
2) The plumbing boots on the roof were replaced by a handyman about 2 months ago when we bought the home.
3) I have occasionally noticed a sour, mildewy smell coming from the utility room (washing machine area - but hard to pinpoint exactly where)but it is not always noticeable.

It's a Friday so if I need to call a plumber I need to do it today, before the weekend! Your prompt reply is appreciated!
