Oops! The book mentioned was by Bob Flexner, not me. You should be able to get a copy at a home center or library, or online. It is a good book on wood finishing. Can't find my copy; I think my daughter borrowed it.
You asked if you should wait for the linseed oil that is coming up out of the cracks to dry out, and I would say yes. BTW you probably cannot get NAPHTHA at a home center; may have to go to a paint store. It is potent stuff and home centers are afraid of it. Painters have been using it for decades.
Be sure of what the paint store is telling you to use and read the directions carefully before even opening the can.
