Basement Drains

I have a house built in the 20's, there are two grate drains in the basement. One is about 2 ft by 2 ft and usually has water in but but overflows when it rains into another small round floor drain. My question is: What is the large drain for? Is there an old type of central drain syestem that was used in the 20's? Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
