this "can" be kind of dangerous, so if you're not absolutely sure, don't do it yourself. How you get 220 is with a double wide breaker. Each of the bus bars in the breaker box is 110V, but they alternate in phase. First one is 0 degrees second one 180 third is 0 etc. A single breaker just tapes one 110 line, the double wide taps two 110 lines, but they're out of phase so it really becomes 220Vrms. You would have to remove the breaker, move the red wire tapping the voltage to the room outlets (it's set for a 220 spacing) then replace the double wide breaker with a single one.
Or you could just put in a single and move the wires.
