septic tanks don't have vents

There is no vent in an anaerobic septic tank. But there are access hatches. If you are seeing an overflow, you need maintenance, and that is not a DIY job. You need to call the pump truck. You can save money if you expose the hatches yourself. When you have the tank pumped, the serviceman can help you figure out what other problems exist. Sounds like there might be some. Good luck
