Using a Heat gun to remove paint from a metal front door

I have a front door make from metal (foam interior) and it has chipped paint in various locations. I think the paint is a latex. Could I use a heat gun to soften the paint then use a puddy knife to scrape the paint off. I think this would be safer and cleaner than using chemicals. Anybody tried this method with success?
