Garage Rafters & Joists

Posted by Aaron Dehne on July 25th, 2003 01:33 PM

I recently purchased a home with an older garage that has "A" frame rafters. I reinforced the rafters with new boarders at the peak going from one side to the other. There was only about 4 2x4 "ceiling" joist beams running across the width of the garage and then loosely attached to the rafters with angled boards. It seems all of the weight is directed off of the rafters and down the side of the garage and the joists seem to be doing nothing. Are these neccessary? I'm thinking about replacing a few on one end with 2x6s for storage. Do I need to have these joists run from one rafter to the other all the way through the garage and have support boards up to the rafters themselves?

Thanks in advance and I hope I'm using the right terminology.

Aaron
