Jen, sealing the wood with shellac is a good way to get rid of any odors that are in the wood, at least for unpainted wood. Get some shellac and I would cut it 50% with denatured alcohol for this. You may need the alcohol to clean the brush and wipe up any spills so this will be handy to have. You can use about any kind of brush for this but the cheap ones with the white bristles and wood handles work well. You do want to do the whole inside of your cabinet and any drawers totally. The smells can be hiding anywhere. If you are worried about the safety od shellac, shellac made to medical purity is used to hold many pills and tablets together. I would not recommend eating the flakes or anything like that but it should not hurt you much if you do.
