.. I'm not an engineer, first of all ...

If you were to remove the entire slab in the basement, one of the dangers you would run into is the outside foundation walls being pushed inward by the earth outside. (This is a consideration when digging a french drain.)

.. So to take out a section in the middle, I'm not certain how much around the perimeter you need to keep to prevent the pressure from being an issue... Just something to keep in mind-
