In most cases, the purpose of a battery back-up pump would be to take over in case you lose power during a storm thus preventing a flooded basement. You could mount the back-up pump above the primary. If water levels reach the back-up, it will kick on pumping the water out. If you want to go with a single pipe, just tap into it with a "Y" fitting and connect your back-up to that. I think you should have a check valve for each pump. You could use just one, place it on the pipe above the "Y", but most pumps require a check valve within 6" or so of the discharge. Good Luck
