I have the same problem with rust spots on the clothes. We don't get an odor or any showing of rust in the water from anywhere else, our washer machine is only 2 yrs old, I am at a complete loss.
I have even ran a rinse cycle with a bit of vinigar as I heard this was a great way to clean your washing machine thoroughly.
rust spots are still appearing, and my machine is always in use.
In the meantime I have been using lemon juice(pure) squeezing it over the rust spots on my clothing and then putting it in the sun,they disappear like magic, this may help some of your readers, it's cheap and works like a charm.
