After reading your posts and taking some time to take
a careful look at what i have, I decided to
hire a contractor to install the hardwood flooring. I
purchased the flooring yesterday and am scheduled to
have it installed in the middle of December.

As for the doors, trim, jambs, baseboards --- one door
was removed and i gave it a sanding job (belt sander,
sanding bloc, and steel wool) The finished job is exactly
as you described. I will be removing all old wood and have
the contractor install new oak doors, jambs, basebords etc.

As i look at it now, this job was well above my expertise
but you folks have stimulated the thinking on my part.
