Cleaning Ceramic Tile Posted by BobF on July 31st, 2003 01:41 AM In reply to Removal of leveler on ceramic tile by LS on July 30th, 2003 11:03 AM [Go to top of thread]
No easy way that I would bet on, and about anything you do will damage the grout.
But with that negative warning, do try to clean it up. What will work depends upon what the compound is made of. I would start with vinegar in water and a 4" wallpaper razor scraper. Then next up the list would be phosphoric acid; this is what tile pros use to remove excess grout from tile. Maybe even go so far as muratic acid; but this stuff is dangerous. Wear gloves and a fume mask and eye protection. It gives off very unpleasant odors, so treat it with caution.
On the other hand, if the material is a mastic of some sort, lacquer thinner may work.
In the end, you will probably have to regrout, but don't let that deter you; it is not that difficult. Visit my website at www.bobf.info and read the tile topic. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
