I would say an 8'x8' is more like a drum risor. Here is what I did for that exact thing. It only requires 4 screws, and sets up in 5 minutes.
This is a 3 part system.
Part 1:
4) 8' x 18' x .75" boards.
This is hard to explain, but set them out long ways on the ground, with the 18" going vertical. Now, a .7625" x 9" slot needs to be cut along that 18" side. Start your slot 1.5" in from each end. You will have two slots on each board. Do this for all 4 boards. When finished, flip over two of the boards so the slots face down, and slide all the slots together, making a big 8x8 box. A picture would really help you guys out here.
Section 2
2) 8' x 18' x .75' boards
Measure from corner to corner of the inside of your box. It should be around 8' since it is a diagonal. Now, cut the same kind of slot in the middle of each board. Flip one over, put the slots together into an X configuration. This X will now fit in the box, and help support the Top.
Part 3 - The top
29 49 2'x 4' x .75" pieces of plywood.
I routered in tongue and grooves on opposing long sides of these boards, and put them end to end to form my top. I then hold the entire thing together with 4 screws, one on each corner just to keep it from moving around. That't it. If you want some visuals, shoot me an email.
This things works best on level ground because there are no adjustments (there are no legs to adjust). It is stable though, and stacks up in a 2' x 8' x 7.5" tall stack, which is pretty good.
