re-doing the basement

Our basement has a horrible "basement" smell .. and we want out child .. age of 14 to be able to have friends over, but with the condition of our basement its an embarassment. We have a computer desk, a old ugly green chair, a couch and a chair that matches, a tv dresser, an air hockey table, a regular table, a bed, and the walls are ugly concreate .. what should we do ??
