Flooded basement repair

Posted by BobS on August 5th, 2003 07:58 AM

I just recently began to finish 1/2 of my basement. I put a plastic vapor barrier up between the block wall and the 2x4 studs. I unfaced fiberglass insulation and drywall and painted. Just before I was going to install the carpet the entire basement flooded, not more than a 1/2 inch in spots. The main problem was that the water came in from underneath the floor. It ran in from along the spacer between the floor and the walls and ran under the 2x4 plate and began to soak into the wood and drywall. A sump pump was installed and the water is now gone and the studs have dried out with a dehumidifier and fans and the drywall has been cut off about 5 inches high. The studs have mold on them about 4 inches up that I have sprayed with bleach/water solution. What else should be done to the studs and do I have to replace all of the insulation or can I pull it out through the bottom of the wall and cut off 6 inches and leave the rest without worrying about mold growing on it?
