Laura Correct me if I'm wrong, sounds like you are installing the windows with the old window frame still intact. If this is the case, you can still install them by removing the old frame, problem is you are going to have a lot more room around the window to fill. Block & shim the window to the suit your interior / exterior finishe when trimmed out depending on your exterior / interior finishes it will not look right. When insulating use a spray foam, when installing use roberts (square head) screws this way you can adjust the window. Cheers
