painting water stains on textured ceiling

Our master bath tub overflowed and leaked through the ceramic tile causing brown water stains on our textured DR celing. We painted over it with a sponge applicator and with paint left by the former owner. Now the stains are partially covered, but they are shiny. What do we need to do? Thank you.
