I am about to close on the purchase of an older home with asbestos roof shingles. The house is in good shape and the price is good, but I worry about the health risks posed to me by the roof. Could asbestos fibers have contaminated the attic storage or the living areas? Should I have the house tested for this? If I remodel the attic and put in windows to make it a bedroom, is the expense of safely handling the roof debris a major addition to the average cost of such a project? If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", I will look for another house instead. Thanks.
