I've been a rather infrequent visitor to the forum lately, but I have some info for you (I treat both CCA and the new copper-based preservatives in the Northeast).

First of all, there is no such thing as 'arsenic-free' lumber. Arsenic is in everything as a trace element that's naturally occuring. CCA lumber (been in use for 70 years) is now being phased out. That material is treated with Pentavalent Arsenate.

The new material is treated either with Copper Tebuconazole (Copper Azole, ot CA-B) and marketed as Natural Select, or it's treated with Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ)and marketed as Nature Wood and Preserve.

Both ACQ and Copper Azole have corrosion increases over CCA. Without making ANY allegations against the fastener industry, I will tell you this:

Both of the new Copper-based preservatives fall WELL within the standards for corrosion set by the fastener industry. Simpson can really do what they very well please because they own the company. Because of that, I suggest looking at hangers made by other companies.

If you can afford galvanized hot-dipped hangers, get them. But please make sure that you do use galvanized hot-dipped screws to secure your decking down to the joists.
