Marj, we did a quick refinish on our hardwood floor in one bedroom recently. Our process was to remove the carpet, pad and tack strips; fill the nail and staple holes with Minwax HP Wood Filler and a plastic putty knife; scuff sand with 150 grit paper in a finish sander; vacuum and wipe down with a tack rag twice; apply a coat of thinned Cabot's Oil Modified Polyurethane Floor finsh (thinned 15% with mineral spirits) and a 3" brush; allow to dry for 24 hours and repeat from the sanding step except using 220 grit paper and full strength poly. Came out great and our place is about the same age as yours.
There is a floor renewal system that has recently been put on the market by Varathane. What little we have heard about actual results to date has been good and you might want to check this out.
