House Fire

We recently had a house fire and the upstairs was all burnt to the rafters. Everything has been restored except the part of the Chimney the comes up from the main floor at the top of the stairwell. It's the first thing you see when you come up the stairs.I have scrubbed it and cleaned with acid several times and the best I can get is an ugly looking rock. I would love to have this rock look nice again.The house is about 100 yrs old we have done all the work ourselves but this one has us stumped. It is Sandstone I think. Do I have to Paint it?
