Barbara, I would not use texture paint, particularly in the kitchen. Cleanability is usually a major issue in a kitchen and texture paint ranks really low for that. A semi-gloss acrylic latex will serve you much better in the long run. Without knowing if your kitchen and dining rooms connect, I can't comment on the dining room. If you have a natural break between the rooms, you should be able to use a texture paint. And if one of these is your choice, you want to be sure to obtain, read, understand and follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly. There have been many problems posted here in the past about some of them. You might do a search of the board for the past history of they type and brand you are considering. "Mr. Paint", among others who post here regularly can be counted on to at least direct you to where to get good instructions.
