great suggestion with the black light - the urine / spray will cast off a yellow glow. Usually with cats , they will find a spot to go to and continue to use this spot , so its very important to remove and treat to eliminate all odor /traces. If the animal isn't in the house any more , this isn't as critical.

In some extreme cases , disengaging the carpet , cleaning the backing , replacing the section of padding , and using a floor sealer is necessary to correct problems that have saturated the backing and reached the subflooring.
Try a pet store / janitorial supply and see if they offer an enzyme / odor digester . This is usually very effective in eliminating they problem from the carpeting. However , if the subflooring has been effected , it has to be sealed.
