Natasha..........clean with Methyl Hydrate (alcohol) - apply one coat (rolled) of Glidden Ultra-Hide Gripper - Then two coats (rolled) of at least a Semi-Gloss finish. RL, Glidden Ultra-Hide, Glidden Evermore - are all good Semi-glosses.
This isn't going to be as strong as the laminate - but treat it well - and it will work for you.
