Drywall and removing wallpaper

Hello All, I've got a question. The other day, I was removing wallpaper in our kitchen that had previously been painted over (several times). Now, when I pulled the wallpaper off, I got two results. First was a thin white layer of paper. I read that this is common with old wallpaper. The second result was a brown, thick cardboard substance. Now, I image this is the drywall, but it's doesn't look like any drywall I've ever seen. Its not smooth, but resemble a piece of cardboard after it has been ripped in half. Does anyone know what this is and how I might be able to prep it for painting?
