We don't know if this solution will work for everyone, but our results were truly miraculous.
We have a 16 year old incontinent cat and a 95 year old house with blond hardwood maple floors, varnished with a clear latex (water base) finish.
When we came down to the dining room and found horrid cat pee stains on the dining room floor - leaving gross gray and black stains into the wood - we hand sanded the damaged area (the stain and the area immediately around it) with a course sand paper, until the finish was removed, the wood was course, and some of the stain was removed. We sanded until we got to dry wood ~ gone, but we didn't go deep, really. We tried a finer grade sandpaper and steel wool, as well. When it seemed like we weren't getting any more stain off, we dribbled full strength hydrogen peroxide into the blackened stains, and smoothed it around.(We soaked the stains, and just dampened the areas around the stains.) We waited until that dried (1 1/2 hour or so), then applied a second hydrogen peroxide treatment. We waited again until it was dry, and then applied a third - still soaking the stains (which had already lightened a great deal). For us, three times was the charm...
After three applications of peroxide, the cat stains were completely gone. We were concerned because the whole peroxided area looked bleached... it looked much lighter than the still varnished wood around it. But when we applied a clear semi-gloss varnish to the area we had stripped and sanded, it darkened to the exact color of all the surrounding wood. AND the cat pee stains were completely gone.
We haven't tried this yet on a stain which is about 2 years old... but we're hopeful, given the success on the day-old stain. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
