Flue gases from the Lopi will be much cleaner and cooler except during startup than older wood stoves. The problem is that wood stove gases will condense creosote on the masonry chimney if a liner is not in place. I have had it both ways. In my last home we operated a wood stove directly through a masonry chimney. It required frequent cleaning and inspection. Buildups can be hazardous. In my current house we have a full metal flue pipe in the chimney. This stays hotter than the masonry, and does not collect creosote. It requires amost no maintenance. Performance is a wash. So it really depends on whether you are prepared to do the increased maintenance that will be inevitable if you discharge to the masonry rather than the flue pipe. Either way is safe provided you maintain it. Whats it worth?
