In reply to Header Span Lengths, Code Question by BE on August 21st, 2003 12:25 PM [Go to top of thread]

Comparibly sized LVLs would be better. Building codes are minimum standards. The likelihood that the 2x10s probably with 1/2 plywood or chipboard sandwiched meets code is very great. Usually when thorough plan reviews are done, the reviewer checks for callouts on all l.b. headers. Your 2x10 is probably a minimum, and was accepted by the reviewer and the builder. Personally for that span, I'd have used 2x12's, but the problem there is you are down to 7' of headroom under conventional 8' ceilings, so I might have opted for a double 9 3/4" LVL. My hunch though is that the header you have isn't really bearing a roof load, but perhaps just a floor/interior wall. If that is the case, it isn't bearing much load at all.
