I did ask the contractor and he said it is better (for the reasons you state), but that it's not necessary by any means and he didn't want to "oversell". I would think if he thought it was necessary, he would have gladly included it in his estimate.
Here's what I think I'll do. Get the direct connect for now and, if later on I decide that I need the steel liner, I'll have it added.
