floors Posted by Henry in MI on August 23rd, 2003 05:21 AM In reply to hard wood floors by bear on August 23rd, 2003 03:39 AM [Go to top of thread]
Humidity makes wood expand and contract. There will be a change in the wood's length, but very little change, with a change in humidity. The change across the face of your wood will seem to be much more pronounced. The will also be a change in thickness, but this is hard to see or measure.
Wood finishes vary on their ability to slow changes in the amount of water that the wood will absorb in time. A total covering with melted wax stops water transfer the best but still not completely. Other finishes don't do this anywhere nearly as well.
With this info, did you allow the wood to acclimatize to your house and it's new home before you installed the floor? Has the humidity changed in your floors world? It takes a couple of weeks for wood to get used to being in its new home and this means being in the same area and where the air can get to it for moisture transfer. With what you have said alone, we can't say why. Let us know more of the particulars, and we can try to say more.
