Kitchent Mosaic using Tile

Hi, I'm making a tile mosaic that will be behind my stove and sink. I've been trying to paint the tiles to achieve the exact colors, but haven't had much luck. When I used acrilic paint, it peeled off, and the oil based paint takes a long time to dry! What is the best way to paint these tiles? I'm using an assortment that was given to me by a floor store, because they were broken (lucky for me since I'm breaking them anyway)! Most of the tiles are a stone marble look with a very light gloss look. They are not very shiny and they have pits to achieve the marble look.
