Craftsman garage door opener does NOT open door

I used the door jutst 2 days ago in a normal way.
Yesterday morning, when I tried to open it, it came up only part way and stopped. When I pushed the remote control again, the door closed.
Since then, I cannot open the door.
The Craftsman garage door opener is over 10 years old. It has a lightbulb attached that stays on for a while after I used the door.
This light bulb has power. I also hear clicking noizes when I press the remote control.
With the top of the opener off, I also see small sparks from the control unit of the opener when I push the remote control.
The disconnected door, travels freely up and down. I have no problems opening or closing the door by hand.
The motor of the opener, howere, does NOT move.
Is there anything I can do to find out what is wrong before I replace the entire opener ????
