Painting particleboard furniture

I've got one holdout from my apartment days -- one of those particleboard-covered-with-woodgrain-paper armoires (Sauder). It's in a guest room and quite honestly, it fits beautifully there. So I'm thinking about painting it or doing a crackle finish to antique it. How do I do that? What should I use? How do I prep the surface? Or should I just throw it out? Thanks!
