Judi, this can be done. We can't advise you as to whether you should do it unless we know a lot more. Right now, we don't even know whether it is wood or metal in the door, its age or condition.
I suspect that you will want to start by trying to contact the manufacturer, or the company that represents the manufacturer, in your area. Get a quote from them for repairing your present door and have them say exactly what they will do to fix the problem. Then get two more quotes from other companiers for repair or replacement and go from there.
