Let's be honest about this.
You got a FREE $5000 water treatment system when you purchased your house. The resin tank was not in the garage or buried in the ground, so a freeze burst it, possibly because it was full of water that was not running.
Now you want to shoot yourself in the foot, even though the lifetime factory warranty covers the resin tank. If it was purchased by the previous owner, you should contact them and ask them to request warranty service, although the factory might honor it for you (it is normally an original owner warranty).
It is not that expensive to replace the tank. I recommend you do it and then enjoy the fabulous Rainsoft water the previous owners enjoyed.
A service call of $75 is not unreasonable in this day of high prices. My local handyman gets $65 an hour, and he has no skill at all with water treatment systems.
You should contact the factory and inquire about the warranty. You can get the service department of Rainsoft at 1-800-RAINSOFT or fill in the customer support form at http://rainsoft.org. Ask for Bob Markese. He is a specialist in helping upset customers. He might tell you the warranty is only good for the original owner, but it is worth a shot.
