Shower Kit Posted by BobF on September 1st, 2003 01:32 AM In reply to Shower Enclosure by Debra Psimer on August 31st, 2003 08:55 PM [Go to top of thread]
A window over a tub is common; we have one. We have tile on that wall that looks brand new even though it is 35 years old. The point is that your tile must have been installed over drywall or the like. If it had been installed over a proper backing, it should give no problem.
You should be able to install a shower surround kit around the window, but it would be smart to ask before buying in regard to that particular brand. If you go that route, you had better let the wall dry out well before installing the kit or you could be trapping moisture and mildew behind it.
I would wash it down well with a tile cleaner that contains a mildewcide and then let it dry for several days. You will have to figure out how fit the kit around the window and seal it absolutely watertight, or you could have an even worse disaster than you have now.
I'm not paranoid about mold but this situation is a real setup for disaster. Just make sure you have it under control.
Your alternative would be to remove the tile and do a proper tile job. If you want to consider that, read the tile topic on my website at www.bobf.info. If you do the tile job right, after cleanng out the structure behind it, it could last a lifetime. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
