Uneven floor

Hello. In 1995, we had a major remodeling job in our house, which called for adding three new bedrooms on the second "split level" of our house. Now we have two landings. The problem is that in two of the rooms which face the front of the house the floor is not straight. It slopes down to the center of the house.
In the past when we have asked the contractor about it his response "well, the ceiling was not staight, what did you expect?" The floors were installed on the ceiling of the "old house" adding another level.
The question is how do I have this fixed and should I persue legal action against the contractor?
I am much more interested in a remedy to the current situation.
