Paintable Caulk vs. Glazing

I am working on painting the exterior of a house that has not seen any maintenance for 25 years. Most if not all the glazing compound on the windows is cracking and needs to be replace. The wood mullions stick out only about a 1/4". It looks like an ideal place to use a bead of paintable caulk. My question is: Is this an area that good quality caulk would work or should I use glazing compound? Caulk will be much easier to work with on 9 - 72" tall windows.
