Marla, here's two suggestions. 1) Polyurethane would be a good idea for lasting protection, just be sure to lightly buff the surface and completely clean prior to applying. 2) Temporary results can be accomplished by using a wood oil (i.e., Scotts Liquid Gold, Old English, etc.). Option #2 will require applications approximately once a month or so, but will keep a good shine to the woodworking. Oh, almost forgot find out "exactly" what kind of finish the builder used. You want to use the same thing and texture. Good luck!
