staining pressure treated pine

We just had a brand new deck made of pressure treated pine. Our contractor says we have to wait a whole YEAR before we stain or water treat the wood to give it time to properly dry and shrink. That seems a bit long, we think. We live in the midwest and get rain and snow and sub-freezing temperatures in the winter. We want to make sure our expensive venture LASTS. Should we REALLY wait a whole year?
